In 2009, during the 2nd International Youth Conference on Energy conference, members of the Student Association of Energy decided to form the Joint Student Branch Chapter of the Industry Aplications and the Power & Energy Societies (Joint IAS/PES SBC).
The main goal was expanding connections and establishing a stronger international presence.
In 2010, the Chapter got its first award for the activities in 2009, the "IAS Outstanding Student Branch Chapter" award. The success story continued in the following years, the chapter winning IAS and PES awards each year, and members attending various international conferences and trainings.
Main activities of the Joint IAS/PES SBC include:
Organizing the International Youth Conference on Energy, a conference technically co-sponsored by IEEE societies, member of the student-led IAS Club of 6 conferences.
Organizing lectures within the Distinguished Lecturer Program.
Organizing internal programs, soft and hard skill trainings and team building events.
Organizing joint events with other SBCs and organizational units within the Hungary Section and beyond.

The International Youth Conference on Energy is a bi-annual, student-led conference, member of the IAS Club of 6 conferences. The goal of IYCE is for students (BSc, MSc, PhD) and young professionals to come together and present their research in a friendly, but international environment. The location alternates between Hungary and a different European country, so participants can enjoy getting to know a new culture as well as participating in technical programs.
You can find more information about IYCE at iyce-conf.org.

The SBC organizes a distinguished lecture each year, with topics ranging from renewable energy to high voltage and challenges of the electricity grid. The main goal of these lectures is to bring international experts to the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, so students can get first-hand information about recent topics and engineering news from around the world. Experts have been invited from the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden and Greece. These lectures are often co-organized with the Power & Energy Society Hungarian Chapter.
Each year, members of the SBC represent Budapest and the Hungary Section at various international IEEE events. These events include technical conferences, where many of our members publish papers or present posters; volunteer leadership trainings and events engineered towards young professionals; or international workshops and lectures. In the last few years, members travelled to the United States of America, Canada, Taiwan, Tunesia, the United Kingdom, Turkiye, Cyprus, Switzerland, Egypt, and so on. We are proud of our members who publish their research at international conferences and in journals, and who expand our international network at these events.

The Build the Future – Girls in STEM event was jointly organized by the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Hungary Section and the IEEE BME Joint IAS/PES Student Branch Chapter. The main goal of the program was to bring the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) closer to young girls and to inspire them to consider a career in these exciting and creative fields. The event demonstrated that engineering is not only intellectually stimulating but also accessible and rewarding for women. In the first event in 2025, nearly fifty high school students participated in the one-day event, which offered a hands-on insight into the practical aspects of STEM education and research. The event is planned to be organized annually.
